Philosophy & Team Values
To promote a positive team culture where all swimmers can develop and work towards their potential, the SLO Swim Club actively encourages its members to promote the seven core team values – Sportsmanship, Energy, Attitude, Health, Awareness, Work Ethic, and Kindness. We strive to empower athletes to promote these values on a daily basis. We believe that embracing these Team Values will help athletes improve as swimmers, become better teammates, and also facilitate their growth into quality human beings beyond the pool. The next page outlines some examples of how we these team values can manifest in practice and/ore competition.
SEAHAWK TEAM VALUES
SPORTSMANSHIP
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all practices and meets by acting with humility towards teammates and competitors and respecting the decisions of all officials and coaches.
- While swimming races are contested individually, we view swimming as a TEAM sport and that being a Seahawk means being part of a TEAM. All members should strive to be quality teammates through productive communication, an encouraging attitude, and a desire to contribute to TEAM as a whole.
ENERGY
- Athletes are encouraged to bring energy, enthusiasm, and passion to the sport of swimming. Cultivating this energy and channeling it productively can help build motivation and develop a love for the sport.
- When athletes bring energy to practice and meets, the whole TEAM benefits.
ATTITUDE
- Maintaining a positive attitude can help athletes perform at a higher level, be better teammates, and increase enjoyment for the sport.
- Just as in life, swimming will have ups and downs – we encourage athletes to develop a growth mindset to help them see challenges as opportunities for learning, growth, and improvement.
HEALTH
- Swimmers are encouraged to choose actions that will impact their physical and mental health in positive ways.
- Swimmer should avoid actions that are detrimental to their own health and the health of others.
- We value athletes’ health and safety and strive to provide an environment where all members feel safe to participate.
AWARENESS
- We want to build athletes’ awareness to help them see the big picture and make quality decisions. Athlete’s should use a “think first, act second” to become more aware of how their actions will affect themselves and others.
- This can include awareness of themselves as swimmers and people, awareness of others, and awareness of rules and safety.
WORK ETHIC
- Athletes are encouraged to develop a strong work ethic in the pool. This includes giving consistent effort, listening and following through on coaches’ directions, maintaining focus, and working towards goals.
- We believe that when athletes learn to work hard in the pool, they build positive habits for life.
KINDNESS
- We expect athletes to treat others with respect at all times – having respect for others is fundamental to treating people with kindness.
- Kindness goes a step further in treating others how they want to be treated and going above and beyond to consider other’s feelings and make them feel valued.
- Kindness is a choice, and we encourage all Seahawks to choose to be kind to others.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT
- We believe that the learning, refining, and training swimming skills is how swimmers improve.
